ISLAND FARMHOUSE HISTORY
When large scale commercial poultry processing left Vancouver Island in 1999, consumers were left with few opportunities to purchase Island-grown poultry products. Proposed new provincial meat inspection laws were poised to have significant impact on the few remaining processors.
Island Farmhouse Poultry Ltd. was established in 2005 by the Young family as a way to support and promote small-scale Vancouver Island poultry farms. It accomplished this by giving them access to a fully compliant processing facility – the first facility in BC to meet stricter new provincial meat inspection laws.
The company also wanted to support food-savvy Island consumers, who were wanting to make more informed decisions about the food they were eating and where it came from. Having access to locally-grown products at local grocery stores was important to them. At the same time, their ability to be able to play an integral role in protecting the local food supply was just as critical.
By purchasing Island Farmhouse Poultry products, Island residents can take pride in knowing they are not only supporting local farms, but they’re also positively affecting the local food supply while helping to keep the local agricultural industry viable.
